What are the hardest topics in STPM Biology?
Biochemistry (Term 1 — especially enzyme kinetics and the light reactions of photosynthesis), molecular genetics and DNA technology (Term 2) and the nervous system (Term 3) are consistently the most demanding. These topics require understanding at a molecular level rather than simple memorisation.
Is STPM Biology suitable preparation for Medicine?
STPM Biology is excellent preparation for Medicine at Malaysian public universities. However, achieving the required CGPA (typically 3.83–4.00 with Biology and Chemistry) is very demanding. Students applying for Medicine via STPM need to excel in all three Biology terms AND in Chemistry.
Does STPM Biology have a practical exam?
STPM Biology does not have a separate practical examination paper. Practical skills are assessed through PBS (Pentaksiran Berasaskan Sekolah) school-based assignments in each term. Tutors help students understand the experimental methods and data analysis required in PBS assignments.
What is the difference between STPM Biology and A-Level Biology?
Both cover similar content at comparable depth. A-Level Biology (Cambridge 9700) has a practical paper (Paper 3 or 6); STPM Biology assesses practical skills through PBS. A-Level is assessed entirely at the end of two years; STPM is modular with exams each term.
