Frequently asked questions

What is Paper 3 in IB Physics?
IB Physics Paper 3 has two sections — Section A tests data-based questions from a given experimental scenario; Section B covers one of four option topics (Astrophysics, Engineering Physics, Imaging, Relativity). Most schools choose Astrophysics.
What is the IB Physics IA?
The Physics IA is an individual experimental investigation (6–12 pages) where students design an experiment, collect data, process and analyse results, and evaluate their method. It is worth 20% of the final IB Physics grade. Tutors help with experimental design and the write-up.
Is IB Physics HL harder than A-Level Physics?
Both are demanding. IB Physics HL covers similar content — IB goes slightly less deep in some areas but the Paper 2 data response questions require sophisticated graphical analysis skills. The IA requirement adds an additional component not present in A-Level.
What are the most difficult IB Physics HL topics?
Electromagnetic induction, quantum physics (Heisenberg uncertainty, wave-particle duality) and fields (gravitational, electric and magnetic field comparisons) are consistently rated the hardest by IB Physics HL students.
