IB Maths Analysis & Approaches (AA) — frequently asked questions

What is IB Maths AA?
IB Maths Analysis & Approaches (AA) is the algebraic, proof-based IB Maths course. HL covers calculus, complex numbers, vectors, statistics and proof. SL covers a subset of these at a less demanding level. AA is required or strongly preferred for university programmes in Maths, Physics, Engineering and Economics.

HL includes additional topics (complex numbers, further integration techniques, proof by induction, Paper 3) and requires roughly double the teaching hours of SL. HL is needed for university Maths, Physics and Engineering at top institutions.
How is IB Maths AA assessed?
Paper 1 (no calculator), Paper 2 (GDC allowed), and Paper 3 (HL only — extended problem solving). Plus an Internal Assessment (exploration) worth 20% of the final grade.
