Unlike UK national exam boards, IB past papers aren't always freely available online — access is typically managed through schools via the IB's official systems. This guide explains what's available, how to access materials, and how to use them effectively by subject.
How IB Past Paper Access Works
The IB distributes past examination papers to schools through a secure platform, and individual students generally access these through their school's IB coordinator. Unlike publicly downloadable AQA or Edexcel papers, this means access can vary significantly depending on your school's resources and how proactively they share materials with students.
Using Past Papers by Subject
Mathematics (AA & AI, HL & SL)
Since the 2019 syllabus change introduced Analysis & Approaches (AA) and Applications & Interpretation (AI), older "Maths Studies" or pre-2019 "Maths" papers have limited direct relevance. Focus on papers from 2021 onwards. Practice should be split between topic-based work (especially calculus, vectors, and statistics) and full timed papers closer to exams.
Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
IB Science papers combine multiple-choice (Paper 1), short/extended response (Paper 2), and option-based questions (Paper 3). Practicing Paper 3 is often neglected since it covers optional topics — make sure past papers match your school's chosen options.
Economics & Business Management
Paper 1 (extended response essays) and Paper 2 (data response, HL only for Economics) benefit enormously from practicing essay structure and evaluation against the official mark schemes — this is often more valuable than simply attempting more papers.
English A: Language & Literature
Past papers here are less about "correct answers" and more about practicing timed essay planning and developing comparative analysis skills across the specific texts your class has studied.
History
Paper 2 and Paper 3 essay questions benefit from building a bank of practiced essay plans for likely topics, since the structure of "compare and contrast" or "to what extent" questions repeats predictably across years.
Combining Past Papers With Tutoring
Past papers are most valuable when paired with feedback — particularly for essay-based subjects where understanding why an answer scored a 5 vs a 7 matters more than just seeing the "correct" response. A tutor who regularly marks IB-style work can provide this feedback loop, which is often the missing piece in self-directed past paper practice.
