A-Level Chemistry past papers are one of the most important revision resources available — but only if you use them correctly. Where to find A-Level Chemistry past papers
Each exam board publishes past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports on their website. These are all free to access:
- AQA: aqa.org.uk/subjects/chemistry — all past papers from 2017 onwards, plus specimen papers for the 2015 specification
- Edexcel (Pearson): qualifications.pearson.com — past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports for both standard and Salters chemistry

Which past papers to use for each exam board
A-Level Chemistry specifications changed in 2015 (first exams summer 2017). Papers before 2017 follow different specifications and should not be used as primary revision material — they may even cause confusion if the content differs from your current syllabus.
- AQA: use 2018–2024 papers. Avoid pre-2017 papers entirely
- Edexcel: use 2018–2024. The 2017 papers are the first set under the new specification
- OCR A: use 2018–2024. The specification changed significantly in 2017
- CIE: use 2020–2024. Earlier papers are still broadly relevant but check against your current syllabus
The examiner reports: the most underused resource in A-Level Chemistry
Every exam board publishes an examiner report alongside past papers. These reports tell you, in the examiners' own words, exactly what students got wrong in that exam and why marks were lost.
Reading examiner reports alongside past papers is enormously valuable. You'll find patterns: the same mistakes made year after year. In AQA Chemistry, for example, examiners consistently note that students lose marks on organic chemistry mechanisms by drawing curly arrows incorrectly, starting from bonds rather than lone pairs or pi electrons.
How to use A-Level Chemistry past papers effectively
The most effective approach combines content review with targeted past paper practice:
- After completing each topic in class, find all questions on that topic from the past five years of papers. Do them under mild time pressure — not full exam conditions, but not completely open-book either
- Mark your work against the mark scheme and identify every mark you didn't get. For each dropped mark, write down the specific reason
- Read the examiner report for any question where you're surprised by what the mark scheme accepts or doesn't accept
- In the final 8–10 weeks before exams, do full papers under timed exam conditions — three hours for A-Level, split across the three papers proportionally
What A-Level Chemistry examiners actually want
Having analysed thousands of mark schemes across AQA, Edexcel and OCR, several consistent patterns emerge:
Precise language: "hydrolysed" not "broken down"; "nucleophilic addition" not "the nucleophile attacks"; "lone pair on nitrogen" not "electrons on nitrogen". Imprecise language costs marks even when the underlying understanding is correct.
Curly arrow mechanisms: in organic mechanisms, arrows must start from a bond or lone pair and point to where the electrons go. Arrows starting from an atom (not a bond) are penalised.
Conditions and reagents: naming the reagent alone is rarely sufficient. You usually need reagent, solvent (if relevant), temperature and sometimes catalyst. "NaOH(aq)" is different from "NaOH(alc)" — one gives substitution, one gives elimination.
Calculations: show all working. A wrong final answer with correct method shown almost always earns some marks. A correct final answer with no working shown earns nothing if the examiner suspects you can't repeat it.
A-Level Chemistry past paper timing strategy
All three A-Level Chemistry papers are two hours long. For AQA: Paper 1 is 105 marks, Paper 2 is 105 marks, Paper 3 is 90 marks. For Edexcel and OCR the paper structures differ but the total mark allocation is broadly similar.
In a two-hour paper worth 105 marks, you have approximately one minute per mark. Extended writing questions at the end of papers are where students most commonly run out of time. Practice these specifically — many students know the content but lose marks simply because they spend too long on calculation questions early in the paper.

Organic chemistry is the highest-weighted topic in most A-Level Chemistry specifications and also the topic where mark schemes are most precise about language and mechanism detail. Key areas that appear frequently across all exam boards:
